The Charlotte region — known around the globe as “Charlotte USA” — is home to the world headquarters of nine Fortune 500 companies. About 2.3 million people live in the region, which spans 12 counties in North Carolina and four in South Carolina. Charlotte USA is strategically positioned at the center of the East Coast: Within two hours by air or one day by ground, for instance, businesses can reach nearly 60 percent of the U.S. population and over 60 percent of the nation’s industrial base. Anchored by America’s second-largest financial services center, the region’s physical, capital, workforce and leadership assets have elevated it into a magnet for globally minded businesses. Underscoring the region’s appeal:
- Charlotte-Douglas International Airport (CLT), which handles 627 daily departures to 127 destinations, including Frankfurt, London, Munich, Montreal, Mexico City and Toronto;
- Currently, there are more than 750 foreign-owned companies in the Charlotte region represented by 46 countries;
- Charlotte USA is served by the largest consolidated rail system in the country;
- The region’s vibrant cultural scene is driven by per capita funding for the arts that is the second most generous in America;
- Some 36 higher education institutions serve the region with instructional curricula, technology transfer programs, community service, and cultural and recreational offerings;
- The region, home to NFL, NBA and other professional teams, is a mecca for spectator sports fans.
Founded in 1992, the Charlotte Regional Partnership is a nonprofit, private/public organization dedicated to the planned growth and prosperity of the Charlotte region. The Partnership also houses the Charlotte Regional Film Commission, which provides filmmakers with a range of services that includes location scouting, permitting, incentives and interaction with local and state government authorities.
In 2007, the Charlotte Regional Partnership was recognized by Site Selection with an Honorable Mention as one of the nation’s top economic development organizations.
The Partnership’s Regional Film Commission was singled out for recognition in 2007 by CoreNet, the worldwide association of corporate real estate professionals, which named the Commission a finalist for its Strategies and Innovations Award.
